The language got in the way of the story, and drew negative attention to the fact that it was a telling. I'm really interested to see where it will go in the next installments in the series. I hope everyone who reads this review will purchase and use a copy of this book. What drew me to the novel was the period and the place since I have long been a fan of Dorothy Dunnett and particularly her Lymond and Niccolo series. I wanted to start introducing the idea of diverse family structures in a way that would be understandable and reassuring to a toddler. She is a flawed character highly flawed but because her flaws are realistic and relatable, she is also a sympathetic character and the things that happen around her give her narration credibility, even as she revels herself to be an untrustworthy narrator. They never stop to consider the ramifications of what they're doing (beyond saying they don't care) and just blaze on.

the malaria-, tsetse fly- and lion-infested wilds, to the Arab markets of Dar es Salaam, some 1,200 kilometres away on the Indian Ocean.With the arrival of the German colonizers, Ali joined the German East African forces as an askari. He worked on the railway line that was being laid from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma and finally to Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria—a monumental feat. With the outbreak of the First World War, he found himself attached to the forces of the legendary German commander, General von Lettow-Vorbeck. He saw action at the Battle of Salaita Hill near Mombasa and was with the General to the end, fighting a guerrilla campaign through southern Tanganyika, Portuguese East Africa, Nyasaland, Northern Rhodesia and to final surrender.
